HR Compliance Corner: Updated Form I-9, WA Paid Sick Leave Expansion & More May Updates

As we head into summer, HR professionals should note several important updates impacting compliance and employee management. From Form I-9 changes to expanded sick leave rights in Washington, here’s what you need to know:

Form I-9 Update: No Need to Switch Immediately

A new version of the Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) has been released—but don’t panic. The updated form only includes minor wording changes and does not need to be adopted immediately. Employers may continue using the current valid version until its expiration date.

It’s a good time to review your I-9 procedures, especially if you use remote verification or third-party services. Remember: if you're enrolled in E-Verify, you may continue using the alternative procedure for remote document examination.

WA State Expands Paid Sick Leave to Include Immigration Proceedings

On April 25, 2025, Washington passed an amendment to its paid sick leave law, allowing employees to take paid sick leave to attend immigration or citizenship-related proceedings. This amendment goes into effect on July 27, 2025.

Employers should:

  • Update sick leave policies to reflect the change.

  • Train managers on the new qualifying reason.

  • Ensure compliance by reviewing leave request processes.

This change reflects Washington’s continued leadership in progressive employee rights legislation.

Reminder: EEO-1 Reporting Deadline is June 4, 2025

Applicable employers (generally with 100+ employees or federal contractors with 50+) must file their EEO-1 Component 1 report by June 4.

This report gathers demographic workforce data, and late filings can result in penalties. Check your data, log in to the EEO-1 portal, and don’t delay.
